Do you find it time-consuming and tedious to copy and paste items across multiple devices? If so, Divert is the app you have been looking for! With its simple, chat-style interface, you can type directly into the app, paste text from your clipboard, and save it to the cloud. Divert syncs all of your content, making it accessible on all your devices. You can now copy from Divert to your local clipboard, saving you invaluable time and energy.

The Challenge

The process of copying and pasting between different devices can be a challenge, particularly when using devices from different manufacturers. People waste time and energy typing long texts character by character, while they could easily copy and paste in seconds. Our challenge was to create a simple, user-friendly interface that would make copying and pasting across devices as seamless as doing so within the same device. We also aimed to make Divert the ultimate solution in terms of functionality, usability, and overall user experience.

Team & Roles

Our team was composed of experienced UI/UX designers and a UX researcher, led by the project manager, Oghenekaro Joshua Okwe. We communicated virtually via Slack, Google Meet, and WhatsApp and used Miro as our whiteboard for planning and sharing ideas.

Research

In order to create an effective solution for copying and pasting across multiple devices, we began by conducting a thorough study of the existing solutions. This process involved examining how these solutions approached the problem, what the user experience was like, which features were most commonly used, and identifying patterns between them. Through this research, we gained valuable insights into what was currently available in the market, what we could learn from these solutions, what to avoid, and how we could improve upon certain aspects.

The solutions we examined are:

  1. Email - The majority of users still use email to send texts and files between their devices. More than 50% of users, according to our surveys, email themselves and copy and paste between devices, as it is fast and efficient.
  2. Clipboard - A Chrome extension and Android/iOS app that syncs text between devices. It has a nice interface, but the verification code isn't a good user experience, and it's not a concept most users are familiar with. Moreover, users cannot select items or search for texts, and there is no time stamp.
  3. ClipDrop - An app on Android, iOS, Windows & Mac OS that uses augmented reality (AR) to capture text and objects in the real world. It has a good interface, but the email bar being black in color made it less visible, especially with the camera's dark background. It also has a good user experience, but it would not be applicable to Divert, as Divert would not have any camera or AR feature.
  4. Magiccopy - An app on Android, iOS, Windows & Mac OS that syncs text between devices. The landing page is nice, and Magiccopy automatically pastes items from the clipboard into the app. It also has a separate place for new items and a separate place for the history of items that were pasted before. On iOS, after refreshing, it duplicates entries.
